Mastery Education in the Martial Arts
One of the goals for the children's class at the MASS Conservatory is for children to develop confidence, courage, kindness, strength and the skills and qualities needed to learn and master anything they put their mind to.
We believe the most powerful knowledge is the kind that lets you experience for yourself exactly what you are capable of because the student who has gone through the challenges of achieving mastery will not need someone else to tell them what they can do and what they cannot do, because they will know for themselves exactly what they are capable of.
This is the kind of confidence that can change the course of the student's life.
In this class children will began to learn the fundamentals of Goju Ryu Karate, they will begin with basic stances, stepping, strikes and blocks and be introduced to concepts found in Kata and Kumite. This will lay the ground work for a practice in Karate but also graduation to the next class where these concepts are explored more fully.
A large emphasis in the 5 – 8 class will be placed on self defense and partner training to promote awareness, safety and kindness. We will gently bring mindfulness and quiet focus into each class with the intention of fostering discipline and learning in a way that is not forceful or dry so students are open and eager to learn. Each class will include physical activities and related games to keep children learning and having fun, but also breathing and stillness to bring the mindful aspects of the Martial Arts into their practice from the beginning.
Children are not forced to do anything in our classes, we don't believe students learn when they have no other option but instead we tailor each class appropriately for the age group to accommodate how the students learns for their stage of life, this includes their physical, mental and emotional abilities but also the unique situations they are surrounded by for that stage of life, be it bulling, peer pressure or aging well.
“If a child doesn’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.” Ignacio Estrada
A Mastery Education in the Traditional Martial Arts will help children develop qualities such as a strong character, kindness, confidence and strength, focus, self-discipline and determination, compassion and gratitude. When children can grow with these qualities we believe their potential and gifts to this world are endless.
This class is taught by Jamie Edwards and Stephanie Schaffner and frequently assisted by senior students from the youth and adult class, ensuring all students receive the support they need.

If your child is not a graduate of the 5 – 9 class and is new to Karate they will have the option of pairing up with one of our experienced students. We have two teachers and frequent assistance by senior students from the youth and adult class to ensure a proper introduction to the martial arts so your child can feel confident and supported as they begin their practice.
In this class children will expand their knowledge of the fundamentals of Goju Ryu Karate. They will further their understanding of basic stances, stepping, strikes and blocks and began to learn kata and partner work with drills and kumite. They will participate in group demonstrations at the end of class and be given the option to preform solo demonstrations of their skills to help build confidence when speaking publicly and allow them to develop a sense of pride in their achievements.
Students will study self defense so they can learn to become aware of physical, mental and emotional dangers and begin to learn how to protect themselves from bulling and physical harm. They will practice mindfulness with the traditional etiquette ceremony at the beginning and end of each class. This allows students to begin their weekly training with a change of mind and incorporate the mindful aspects of the martial arts into their practice, fostering the discipline and quiet focus required to learn and excel in anything they choose to do.

Master the Art, Master Yourself
The Classical Martial Arts are a personal journey where the student will face the challenges of the mind and body and must discover for themself how to overcome them. It is a way of life that cultivates character, peace and kindness, strength and courage, compassion, gratitude and respect. When you start to face what you fear, you don’t get less afraid, you get braver. There’s a difference.
The Classical Martial Arts are systems of deep philosophies and traditions, methods, tools, techniques and principles. In each class at The MASS Conservatory we explore all these aspects of the martial arts in ways appropriate for the age group, in the adult class we encourage students to take these practices a step further and recognize how to integrate our training into our daily lives in enriching and healing ways,
This class is beginner friendly with multiple brown belts available to assist new students who are just begging their practice in Karate or just returning to their martial arts practice. Students who have graduated from the youth class will begin to deepen their understanding of all their prior training, starting this new chapter of their Karate practice with a new perspective on what Karate is and how it can work for us if we learn how to excel within it's parameters.
The first Tuesday of every month the adult class dedicates their training to the study of self defense, it is the goal of The MASS Conservatory that when every students graduates to Black Belt they feel a sense of confidence in their abilities to defend themselves from mental, emotional and physical harm.
In all other classes students will study the fundamentals in their entirety, they will be required to work independently and adopt the spirit of corporation when working with partners or as a class.
One of the philosophies of the adult class is to learn not to fight others, so we can then learn to not fight ourselves, then we will know peace.
This class is taught by Jamie Edwards with assistance by Stephanie Schaffner. As a mixed rank class there will always be senior students available to help, ensuring students have the opportunity to learn at their own pace.

Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Meditation
Focus the mind, strengthen the body, nurture the spirit
“Tai Chi is a philosophy for living; the practice to be a centered, balanced and harmonious person in all situations throughout life. Relaxation and the letting go of unnecessary tension from the body and mind are the main principles emphasized. Constant refinement of this process results in an acute awareness of yourself, and later, others.”
-Wee Kee Jin
A practice in the classical art of tai chi is for the balance of body, mind and spirit. It is about finding balance with what is going on inside you with what is going on outside you. A profound result of the practice is that the mind and body become a place of peace to reside inside of.
