Tai Chi - In partnership with CORAH Centre of Rural Aging and Health for ages 55+

The Art of Aging

Aging asks us to enter into a relationship with a body that is continually changing.

Not a lesser body.

Not a failed version of the body we once had.

The body that carries us through this season of life.

There can be great freedom in learning to listen to it.

Tai Chi offers a gentle and accessible way to continue cultivating strength, mobility, balance, coordination, and confidence while moving with greater awareness and ease.

Regular practice may also support relaxation, sleep, cognitive function, cardiovascular health, and an overall sense of wellbeing.

But perhaps there is another benefit that is more difficult to measure.

Participation.

The simple pleasure of continuing to move.

Continuing to learn.

Continuing to gather with others.

Continuing to discover what our bodies are capable of today.

The Benefits of Tai Chi for Seniors

Regular practice can significantly improve your daily quality of life. Key benefits include:

  • Better Balance and Fall Prevention: Strengthens core and leg muscles, improving stability and spatial awareness.

  • Joint Health: Increases flexibility and reduces stiffness from arthritis without placing stress on your joints.

  • Stress Relief: Deep breathing calms the nervous system, reducing anxiety and promoting better sleep.

  • Sharper Focus: Enhances cognitive function and memory through mindful coordination.

  • Heart Health: Gently boosts circulation and helps naturally lower blood pressure.

  • Community: A wonderful opportunity to meet friendly neighbors and stay socially active.

We sometimes speak about older people as though their becoming has ended.

Yet every age is new when we first arrive there.

None of us has ever been this age before.

We are all learning as we go.

Tai Chi gives us a practice through which we can approach that learning with curiosity rather than fear—with attention rather than comparison.

There is no expectation that the body should move as it once did.

There is no need to memorize complicated forms or perform movements perfectly.

The practice meets us where we are.

What to expect in our CORAH Tai Chi classes

Gentle Movement, Improved Balance, and Peace of Mind.

Tai Chi is an ancient, time-tested, low-impact exercise often called "meditation in motion." Designed specifically for older adults, this class focuses on slow, fluid movements that are easy on the joints.

Every session is conducted in a warm, welcoming, and non-competitive environment. You do not need any prior experience or special equipment.

  • Short Seated Meditation: To bring our awareness inside, find our breathing and let everything slow down inside

  • Gentle Warm-up: We begin with light stretching and breathing exercises to relax the muscles and quiet the mind.

  • Mindfulness Flow: We connect the postures into a continuous, smooth routine that flows together without the need to memorize complex forms

  • Cool-down: The class concludes with a brief period of relaxation and deep breathing, leaving you feeling refreshed and energized.

  • Modifications Available: All movements can be adapted to your comfort level. Seated options are fully supported for anyone with limited mobility or standing fatigue.

  • Video Library Access: Students will have access to an extensive on-demand video library that features full classes you can do at home as well as warm ups, balance routines and detailed instruction that you can do from the comfort of your home at a time of your convenience
